On Playing Calpernia Addams: "Not even my excellent training at Juilliard prepared me for my first movie role, where I played a transsexual who falls in love with a military guy in Soldier's Girl. Here I was, this 6'3" 190-pound lanky kid from Chickasha, Oklahoma, not knowing how to begin being a woman. So I saw documentaries about transsexuals, I lost twenty-five pounds, and I put on prosthetic boobs and hips to become that character. There were times I'd look in the mirror and wonder 'what am I doing to my life here? My dad is going to kill me!' But the reason I went into acting was to be able to play parts as complicated and important as this one. In playing a transsexual, I got the chance to help change people's perspective about other people and that is a powerful thing. I'm playing a swashbuckling bandit in my next film, but I'll always be proud of Soldier's Girl."

On Making Pies: "Pies are very hard to make. I'm still on graham-cracker crust, filling it with whipped cream and Butterfingers. It's very hard, but it's not as difficult as touching something back to life."

On Acting: "This job is never fun. It's interesting, puzzling, funny at times, rewarding. But after the labor, after pulling your hair out by handfuls, after hours of self-flagellation, weeping, dredging up pain and fear and fathoms of self loathing, after starving yourself and punishing yourself at the gym, after chewing your fingernails down to bloody stumps...who could call this job fun?"

On Acting: "The humbling reality is . . . it's just me. My voice, my thoughts. The character is provocation and interpretation. Behind the makeup and the tits, that's my heart breaking. Behind the beard and the accent, that's me behaving like a monster."

On Kissing Troy Garity: " I have friends who say that if a straight man convincingly makes out with another man on screen, then he must at least be bisexual. I say it’s the same as a gay man convincingly making out with a woman. It’s called acting."

On His Love Scene with Troy Garity: "It was a little scary. A lot of that is Frank Pierson, how he shot the thing, because we were really nervous about it, not only doing it, but our mommas were going to see it [laughs]. We were worried about how they were going to shoot it. If you noticed, they keep the camera really close to our faces, so you don’t see a lot of our bodies. We thought we were getting the easy way out of this, but we watch it now and it’s like Jesus Christ…very intense."

On Gays in the Military: "I think that it’s an issue of human rights, and the government is kind of turning a blind eye to the fact that people are being abused and murdered. And I think that’s it’s one of the few policies that you look at, and no one is happy with. The government policy is vague—don’t ask, don’t tell. It makes no sense to me. It just seems like you’re asking for a lawsuit."

On His Prosthetic Boobs: "I actually sent a set of the boobs to my brother. He’s 14 now. I have awful images of him hiding them under his bed and feeling me up [both laugh]."

On Going to Julliard: "A high school student in Houston at 17, Juilliard was the only drama school I auditioned for. It was foolish thinking... I was an arrogant little (jerk) - I just knew I would get in - and luckily I got in. [laughs] Of course, the one thing about Juilliard is that they take the arrogance right out of you. They let you know how you'll be a much better actor if you think less about yourself and more about the work at hand. I'm not arrogant anymore"
