Lee Pace and Anna Friel talk about thier TV show Pushing Daisies, that premieres Thursday, on Warner.
This Thursday, at 9 PM, The Warner Channel premieres the show Pushing Daisies, a modern fairy tale full of creativity, originality and colors, in addition a wonderful soundtrack. The romance, with a spice of criminal investigation, is about the love between Ned (Lee Pace) and Chuck (Anna Friel), who've known each other since childhood. Ned can bring people back to life with just one touch. On the second touch, they die again forever. And then, Chuck dies and is brought back to life by Ned. The problem is they can´t ever touch again.
In London, the "Estado" talked with the cutest couple on TV right now. When they discovered that the journalist was Brazilian, the couple cheered. Out of the ten minutes of talk we had, four minutes was just complements about Brazil – which means, the interview was short… “I went to Arraial D´Ajuda (Bahia). It´s my favorite place”, said Anna. “The Brazilians are the best people. The men's bodies are ‘uau!’. And the men can also look at beautiful women”. Lee loved Rio. “I was there a couple of years ago and I had so much fun… I went to Brasilia (the D.C.) too, but wasn´t that fun…(laugh)”. The actor came back to Brazil recently. He was in Sao Paulo and constantly visited Vila Madalena (a district full of restaurants, bars and discos). Then, he left to Bahia, following Anna´s advice.
How you define Pushing Daisies and your characters?
Anna – It´s an optimistic and happy show. There is so much misery in this world and it' time that TV shows something beautiful, sweet, a fairy tail. There are eccentric characters, such as, Ned and Chuck, who are very much in love. Ned has this power to bring dead people back to life with a touch and he brings Chuck back, but he can never touch her again – with a second touch, the person dies forever. And, in the flashbacks, you see young Ned and Chuck and follow the romance until today.
Lee – Ned brings Chuck back and their lives become very complicated (laugh).
What did you feel when you read the script for the first time, considering that the show is so different than most shows on the air now?
Lee – I liked it, because it´s hard to have the opportunity to do something new and different on TV and believe the audience wants that. In a certain way, everybody follows models that already worked in the past. The show can be consider a soap opera or a criminal investigation, but it´s creative, the love history is unique, the investigations are unique too. The studio and the network are supporting us to follow our instincts. And that helps because Ned is weird (laugh)!
Didn´t you fear that maybe the audience would not accept or understand the show?
Anna – People want something different. Six Feet Under, when it premiered, people said ‘Oh, it´s so weird’ and then it became one of the most successful shows on TV.
Lee – If the audience want to see sexy doctors saving lives and sleeping with each other, there is the option; and if they want to see a different show, they watch ours. And we are dealing with deep subjects, like death and life. Ned killed Chuck´s father and that is complicated. They have to love each other very much to overcome that.
And the show's visuals?
Anna - They showed us an idea of how visual it would be, the colors, the music. But, I was shocked when I saw for the first time. It looked like a movie!
Lee – The crew is very good and the quality is surprising. It´s cinematography.
