Lee Pace didn´t intend on doing a television series, until he read the script of Pushing Daisies, a tv show about a guy who has the ability to bring dead people back to life with one touch – and kill them again with a second touch. “(The show) was innovate, funny, weird”, he told Brazilian journalists. And so, he accepted the part.
During the press junket, the sympathetic lead actor tried to define the genre of Pushing Daisies. “It´s a weird show”, he said. He even spoke about Lost and loved to know that some Brazilians didn´t wait for the premiere on TV – and downloaded everything off the internet!
Pushing Daisies premieres on April 10th on the Warner Channel.
Read parts of the interview:
Why did you decide to accept the role of Ned?
I wasn´t looking to do TV, but the part was better than the most of the film roles that were being offered to me. It was innovate, funny, Ned was a nice guy with so many problems to deal with and I thought that it would be interesting to play him. The character was created by Bryan Fuller, thinking of me, but I had no intention to accept it. I read the script and I ended up liking it very much.
Why the resistance to do TV?
I love TV, but it´s difficult to sign a contract for six years, to be stuck in the same role, committing yourself on that level with that character. But, Ned is special, I don’t think I'm gonna get tired of doing it. The show will evolve, the relationship between them (Ned and Chuck) will change… It´s possible that in the future I'll want to be with someone that I can touch. The things are going to get more interesting as the show progresses.
How would you define Pushing Daisies? In which genre would you put it?
I don´t consider the show to be a ‘supernatural show’ - I really like ‘supernatural shows’ – I watch LOST and like the flashbacks a lot, but when they start with those science fiction things I think it´s a little weird. "PD" is kind of a fairy tale. It´s a weird show, actually. It´s not a drama, it´s a comedy, but with dramatic stuff – Ned is responsible for the death of his mother and Chuck´s father, that's not easy, Ned and Chuck can´t touch, which is very sad. At the same time, it´s funny and sweet.
But are there going to be darker episodes?
Yes, definitely. Ned tells Chuck that he was the responsable for the death of her father, she isn´t very happy with that. And he knows how painfull it is to kill someone and to lose someone.
Is there anyhing that you would change about season one?
Um... My hair cut (laughing). It was terrible! There are also a few things from thier past, sometimes the procedure of reviving the dead and asking them how they died gets a little repetative and few other things, but it´s not appropriate for me to say anything.
The show hasn´t premiere in Brazil yet, but a lot people watch in on the internet in time with the US. For those people, could you tell us a little bit about what we can expect from the second season?
Oh, I love to know that! Um, I can´t say too much, let´s see... The love triangle between Olive, Ned and Chuck will heat up. Also, we´ll have interesting falshbacks that will last a few episodes, Ned and Chuck will talk about her father a lot.
